Use electric toothbrush, soaked in spirit or high-alcohol based cleaner ;)Carefully cover the rest of the typewriter, leaving only the hammers in sight (it can be messy), dip the brush in the detergent (I use the bottle cork for the job) and clean!
With heavier grease or old ink use more aggressive detergent, just put extra care in covering the rest of the machine.
